Applicants are being invited to join a course to learn how to become a qualified lipreading tutor and help improve the communication and confidence of local people who are deaf or have hearing loss.
Lipreading classes teach people with hearing loss how to identify lip shapes, patterns and facial gestures which help fill in the gaps of conversations they haven’t heard clearly. Attending lipreading classes also enables people to meet and be supported by others with similar experiences, challenges and frustrations that hearing loss can often bring.
Course details
The one-year long Scottish Course to Train Tutors of Lipreading (SCTTL) is part-time and starts in September. The course comprises of six study weekends at Forth Valley Sensory Centre covering the theory of lipreading, the psychological and social effects of hearing loss, and audiology. Students will also work alongside a qualified lipreading tutor in their area during 25 weekly classes to gain practical teaching experience.
Alison Pendlowski from SCTTL, who is on the charity Action on Hearing Loss Scotland’s Advisory Group, said: “Learning to lipread plays an important role in helping people to better manage their hearing loss as well as improving communication, health and wellbeing. To help meet the demand of people who are deaf or hard of hearing for the opportunity to learn such a life-changing skill, we would appreciate people applying to join the course and enjoy the rewarding experiences which becoming a qualified lipreading tutor can bring.”
